The above named is a gifted Australian artist.
He has a skill in getting a likeness of his subject and then converting that likeness on to canvas with paint and colouring.
He did this for me on a charitable occasion where funds were being raised to support the cause of HIV treatment and care.
He works very fast; has obviously put a lot of thought into the enterprise; and in a few minutes he had created a likeness of me that delighted the audience. The portrait was quickly auctioned and sold off for a substantial sum. That sum went to the AIDS charity.
Naturally, I thought that I looked better than the image that Matteo created. But discerning people at the event, with better eyesight than my own, affirmed the view of the purchaser that the portrait was accurate and interesting.
I believe that Matteo Charles will go far. Judy Cassab, the famous Australian portraitist, who once executed a portrait of me now hanging in the Law School of the University of Sydney, told me that getting a likeness is the greatest challenge in portraiture. Matteo Charles has faced that challenge and demonstrated his considerable artistic gifts
